In 1978 a headstrong coach with an affection for attacking football left a 17 year old Diego Maradona out of Argentina’s World Cup squad. With the tournament being played on home soil there was a public call for Maradona, but Monetti said no because he thought he was too young. Despite being on the receiving end of a media backlash, Menotti had the last laugh as Argentina lifted the World Cup for the first time.
